Candlelight protest to dispel darkness of corruption

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 8 - Protesting against the rampant corruption in the State and mourning the death of honesty, the young people lighted candles on Sunday near Dighalipukhuri. This was a silent way of expressing angst against the corruption which has become deep rooted in Assam, particularly amongst the political leaders and all section of the ruling class.

This way of protesting was conceptualized in the background of the indifferent attitude of the government towards the grievances of the people.

It needs to be mentioned here that this youth group does not owe affiliation to any political party and neither have any political motivation. One of the members of the group, Ranjan Baruah actively involved in various social activities said that this silent candle light vigil is an initiative to make a strong voice heard by the corrupt politicians and officials of Assam.

This candle light vigil was staged in different parts of the State today.

The government must realize that the common citizens and educated youths of the State are not going to be silent spectators of the non-governance that is persisting in Assam, said Baruah observing that for years the people here have been taken for a ride by one political party after another.

Of late many corruption charges have come to light which has shaken the hopes of the common men. It is time now for the common man to do something, said Baruah.

These young people who have come out to protest came to know each other through the social networking site Facebook. In May 2010, a page was created Supporting Akhil Gogoi in Facebook to inform how Gogoi has utilized the Right to Information Act (RTI) to expose the scandals and misuse of tax payers money by corrupt politicians and bureaucrats. In less than three months, the number of people on the page increased to 1550. This was the place where the youth decided to actively protest against corruption.
