Candle light surgeries in civil hospital questioned

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, July 7 The Shillong Civil Hospital has sought explanation from its Orthopaedic department following reports of critical surgery being performed under candlelights due to non-availability of power back-up during load-shedding period.

Surgeon Superintendent of the hospital, AK Das said he has sought an explanation from the department and warned of strong action against the staff of the department for giving a wrong impression of the hospital.

Stern action would be taken against the staff of the department. They have to give an explanation at the earliest about the report that there was no power back-up in the hospital and critical operations were being performed by the department under candlelight, Das told reporters.

The Surgeon informed that the 600-bedded hospital has seven generators for power back-up, sufficient enough to give back up power for hours. He added there might have been a technical snag in getting the power back up, but to say the hospital does not have the facility was wrong.

Every hospital may have this problem when power goes off during an ongoing operation and its not uncommon that emergency lights are used till the generators provide the back up, but to say there is no back up is totally not correct and gives a wrong impression of the administration, Das stated.

Das also said that the Orthopedic department can use the facility of the main operation theatre and three other available ones which does not seem to have any problem with power back-ups.

Except Gynecology and Pediatrics departments, the Shillong Civil Hospital has all the major departments and carries out several operations in a day.
