GUWAHATI, March 1 - The Munshi Ram Jain Cancer Scholar Award-2019 instituted by the Cancer Research Foundation, India (CRFI) was presented to Dr Rajini Nagrani on Thursday for her research on breast cancer risk factors in the country.

The award function was held in the auditorium of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute. Dr Nagrani did her research at the Center for Cancer Epidemiology of the Advance Center for Research and Cancer Treatment in Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, stated a press release.

During the award ceremony, a scientific lecture on Environmental Pollution and Cancer Risk was delivered by Dr Krithiga Shridhar of the Public Health Foundation of India, New Delhi.

As per the World Health Organization's ambient air quality data, 11 cities of India out of 12 cities globally have the worst air pollution levels. It is a matter of time before the Indian cities and towns become the lung cancer capitals of the world. Furthermore, recent reports indicate a changing pattern in the occurrence of cancers in India, such as the increase in lung cancer among women and colon cancer in men, which can also be attributed to air and water pollution, respectively.

Dr Arup Kumar Misra, the director of Assam Science Technology and Environment Council, attended the event as chief guest. The guest of honour was Dr BG Unni, director (research) of Assam Down Town University.

The late Munshi Ram Jain was the first person to become the chairman of the Assam branch of the Indian Tea Association in 1982. The award has been instituted in his memory by the KL Group, Guwahati.

Dr Amal Chandra Kataki, CRFI chairman and BBCI director, in his message, said compared to the developed countries, cancer research in India is at a nascent stage and hoped that in the near future, researchers of the country would be able to create path-breaking research on cancer prevention and treatment.

Dr Manigreeva Krishna-treya, general secretary of CRFI, gave an account of its activities in the field of cancer research.
