Cancer awareness camp at Guwahati College

GUWAHATI, Feb 7 � A team of eight members of the Indian Dental Association, Guwahati branch attended a cancer awareness camp organised in the premises of the Guwahati College on Wed-nesday.

Dr Pranab Sandilya, Principal of Guwahati College, inaugurated the camp and welcomed the doctors� team.

Dr BR Bhuyan introduced the members and thanked the staff, students and workers of the Guwahati College for extending their cooperation in organizing the camp.

Dr J Barman, immediate past president of the IDA, Guwahati branch explained the importance and significance of the �World Cancer Day� for creating public awareness for prevention and recent advances in the treatment of cancer. Dr Barman briefly stated that factors like tobacco in any form and chronic alcoholism are some of the many recognised causative factors of cancer. He also explained how early detection can cure a cancer patient to lead a quality life.

Dr Sanjay Dutta delivered an audio-visual talk demonstrating various forms of oral cancer. Dr Dutta also talked about early sign and symptoms for detection of precancerous lesion in very common language.

Dr RN Dutta, former professor of ENT briefly narrated the sign and symptoms of oropharyngeal cancer and available treatment facilities.

Several teachers and students made queries regarding the actual cause, the detection of the disease, its treatment and prognosis. Dr Anjan Kr Saikia and Dr RN Dutta answered all the queries.

Dr RP Baruah, secretary of the Association offered the vote of thanks to the speakers and the college authority. Dr Sanjay Kr Gupta, Dr Nilanjan Lahkar and Dr Jitu Thakuriya also attended the programme, a press release stated.
