DOOMDOOMA, Nov 17 - Campaigning for the by-poll to the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat, to be held on November 19, ended peacefully this evening. The No. 125 Doomdooma LAC and No. 126 Sadiya LAC of Tinsukia district are included in the Lakhimpur Parliamentary Constituency.
There are five candidates in the fray for the by-poll. They are Dr Hemahari Prasanna Pegu (INC), Pradan Baruah (BJP), Amiya Kumar Handique (CPI-M), Hemakanta Miri (SUCI) and Dilip Moran (Independent).
It may be mentioned here that Dilip Moran has quit the BJP to contest the by-poll as an Independent candidate after the BJP refused to give him the party ticket.
Campaigning in Doomdooma and Sadiya had gained momentum in the last few days. All the five candidates tried to woo the voters. For the BJP candidate, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and several other leaders campaigned in the two LAC areas.
On the other hand, AICC general secretary Dr CP Joshi, APCC president Ripun Bora, CLP leader Debabrata Saikia, ex-ministers Pradyut Bordoloi and Rakibul Hussain and Doomdooma MLA Durga Bhumij campaigned for INC candidate Dr Hemahari Prasanna Pegu. The CPI (M) candidate also participated in street corner meetings with party leaders in these two LAC areas. Independent candidate Dilip Moran held an election rally at Doomdooma Town Field today.
Meanwhile, the Tinsukia district administration and the Sadiya subdivisional administration have completed all necessary arrangements for the poll.
Silapathar Correspondent adds: Campaigning for the by-poll to the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat concluded on Thursday. The Congress and BJP organised rallies on the last day of campaigning. Chief Ministers of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh attended a meeting at Somkong under the Jonai LAC in Dhemaji district on the occasion.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart, Pema Khandu, appealed to the voters to elect BJP candidate Pradan Baruah. Khandu said that both the State governments would work together for the development of the two States through cultural exchange. Sonowal reiterated his Government�s commitment to check corruption.
The poll meeting was attended by Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Mising Autonomous Council, Dr Ranoj Pegu, Water Resource Development Minister Keshab Mahanta, MLA Chandan Brahma, MLA of Jonai LAC Bhuban Pegu and others. The BJP candidate for the Lakhimpur by-poll, Pradan Baruah also addressed the gathering.
