SONARI, Feb 6 Campaigning for the February 9 civic polls to the Sonari Municipal Board and the Moran Town Committee has gained momentum. A total of 15,392 voters, out of which 8,077 are male and 7,315 female, will decide the fate of 51 candidates for the Sonari Municipal Board. At the Moran Town Committee, a total of 4,798 voters, out of which 2,507 are male and 2,291 female, will decide the fate of 35 candidates.

At the Sonari Municipal Board, the Congress had won all the 13 wards in the last election. This time with the addition of three new wards, the situation is different. The BJP is likely to challenge to the Congress in all the 16 wards under the Sonari Municipal Board. The present chairman of the Board, Dilip Gohain of the Congress, is not contesting this time around. The present vice chairman, Kabir Ahmed of the Congress, is likely to face a tough contest with the BJPs Imdad Hussain.

Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Jorhat MP, campaigned for the BJP candidates in all the wards here. Corruption, bad drainage system due to which citizens have to face flood-like situation after heavy rains, lack of proper planning, etc., are the main issues this time.

Sarat Borkatoky, Cabinet minister and local MLA, campaigned for the Congress candidates in all the wards.

The local administration is ready to conduct the civic polls for the 16 wards of the Sonari Municipal Board in 17 polling stations, while 11 Polling Stations have been set up for the 11 wards of the Moran Town Committee. A media centre-cum-control room has been set up at the office of SDIPRO here.
