Call to upgrade Manipuri Development Council

GUWAHATI, Dec 7 - The Manipuri National Council (MNC), Assam, organised a sit-in-protest at Dispur Last Gate today demanding upgrading of the Manipuri Development Council to Manipuri Autonomous Council through an enactment.

�This demand is to secure overall social, cultural, political and economic development of the community,� a press release by the MNC stated.

The MNC also demanded reservation of three seats for Manipuri representatives in the proposed Upper House of Assam and re-organisation or delimitation of Manipuri-inhabited constituencies like Lakhipur, Sortai, Hailakandi and Hojai to secure political representation in the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The MNC further demanded preservation and protection of the areas and locations of historical significance, depicting the relation of the Ahom and Manipuri kingdoms. These include Mithapukhuri in Sivasagar, Manipuri Rajbari in Guwahati and Pratapgarh Pukhuri in Karimganj.

The MNC also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi demanding urgent steps regarding the matter, the press release added.
