TEZPUR, May 20 � The Tezpur Regional Office of Pollution Control Board, conducted a day-long training programme on bio-medical waste management on May 18 at the IMA House of Tezpur to impart training to the doctors and their staff, from both private and government hospitals, clinical laboratories, blood banks operating in the district of Sonitpur, Darrang, Udalguri and Lakhimpur and to those involved directly or indirectly in the management and handling of the wastes they generate from their institutions during the course of treatment, diagnosis, research etc. The event was sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India with the sole objective to infuse a sense of holistic attitude and approach towards the scientific treatment and disposal of the biomedical wastes.
The meeting was inaugurated with lighting of lamp by Prof AK Mukherjee, Head of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Tezpur University, Meghnad Nath, Regional Executive Engineer, Pollution Control Board, Assam, Tezpur regional office, and Partha Pratim Pathak, Director, Fresh Air Waste Management, Guwahati. Raijv Prakash Baruah, ADC, Sonitpur attended the event as the chief guest and the meet was chaired by the Regional Executive Engineer of Tezpur Regional Office of the Pollution Control Board.
In his welcome address, Meghnad Nath, Regional Executive Engineer, Tezpur briefly explained the objective of the training programme and urged the medical fraternity to seriously take credible action in managing and handling of the biomedical wastes, which otherwise would nullify the service they are rendering by treating patients. He stressed that waste materials that are generated after treatment of patients, if disposed indiscriminately may lead to a proliferation of the infection from one single patient to a larger area.
Resource persons Prof AK Mukherjee, Tezpur University, Partha Pratim Pathak, Director, Fresh Air Waste Management, SR Hassan from NGO, Greenshield (NE) and SZ Arfin, Eastern Envo Protect imparted the training to the participants and shared their research and practical experience with the participants. The training programme was the first one of its kind in Assam, which will be conducted in different towns of Assam, by Pollution Control Board.
