Call to shelve mega dams in NE

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 3 The All Assam Shramik Krishak Kalyan Parishad has demanded shelving of all mega dam projects proposed in the NE region. It has also threatened to launch an intense agitation to force the State Government revoke its permission to a cement factory for setting up a factory near the city.

The Parishad also demanded a clarification from the Government on the sale of the machines of the public sector Chandrapur Yarn Factory.

In a statement here, the Parishad has expressed the fear that the mega dams proposed in the region would ruin the farmers of the State. These will result in severe floods and subsequently lead to desertification of the farmlands of the State with thick sand deposits, said the Parishad.

It has also mocked at the often repeated claim of the State Government that it had been implementing newer schemes for the benefit of the poor people. Such schemes of the Government have not been able to benefit the poor section of the people, claimed the Parishad.

The polluting industries set up with the permissions of the State Government have also been damaging vast areas of farmland in their adjacent areas. The Government is maintaining an indifference towards the problems created by these industries.

Moreover, the Parishad alleged, the Social Welfare Minister of the Government has been trying hard to help a cement company set up its factory at Dhopguri under the Dispur Legislative Constituency.
