NAMRUP, Sept 8 The demand for setting up a new fertilizer plant by the name of Namrup IV, considering the viability of the BVFCLs three plants viz., Namrup I, Namrup-II and Namrup III is a long-standing one. The Namrup Fertilizer Shramik Union (WFSU), has been harping on the demand in different platforms but without any fruitful result.
Speaking on the demand, Tileswar Bora, general secretary, NFSU told this correspondent here that the life span of a chemical plant is not more than 15 years from the technical outlook and the three plants of the BVFCL, Namrup were set up in 1969, 1976 and 1987 respectively. Though the revamp of Namrup-I and Namrup-II had already been completed, the life of these plants would not be expected to be long.
After the stipulated period, the lone major fertilizer industry of the entire north-eastern region would be doomed. Hence the NFSU has demanded the setting up of a new fertilizer plant in the name of Namrup IV to save it from extinction. For the new plant, all the infrastructural facilities, land, water, buildings and other required establishments are already available.
It is worth mentioning that the Namrup fertilizer plant, BVFCL has enjoyed a glorious status in the countrys fertiliser scene, being the largest and only gas-based chemical industry in the entire north-eastern region in terms of employment and producer of low-priced urea to cater to the needs of farmers of the country, contributing a great deal towards industrial and economic development of the backward region.
