Call to revamp PDS in Arunachal

By Correspondent

ITANAGAR, Feb 12 Arunachal Parliamentary Secretary for Food and Civil Supplies, Lokam Tassar, has called for revamping the public distribution system (PDS) in Arunachal Pradesh, besides urging the concerned district officials to be watchful on the PDS operation.

I call upon all the district Food and Civil Supplies officers to put a strict monitoring and vigilance mechanism in place to ensure that PDS commodities reach out to the targeted beneficiaries in all parts of this remote border State, said Tassar while chairing a State level review meeting on public distribution system at Itanagar yesterday.

The Parliamentary Secretary suggested that the present system of drawal and distribution of wheat and levy sugar through State nominees be discontinued instantly, and the district nominees be entrusted the task for a transparent operation of PDS.

While lamenting the poor allocation of food grains by the Central Government, he said that small atta chakki mills be established in all such locations of the State where FCI depots do exist.

Expressing concern on mushrooming of new fair price shops (FPS) at a time when the State was experiencing deficiency in food grains allocation, Tassar called for immediate stoppage of issuing fresh FPS license till the improvement of food grains allocation.

He also suggested the officers concerned to work out modalities for claiming separate allocation from Government of India to meet the requirement of rice for floating populations like BRTF, ITBP, CRPF, IRBn, labourers of mega projects, Mission schools, etc.

He further urged that all the administrative officers like EACs be instructed to stop issuing special permits of rice for preparation of country-made liquor, locally called Apong.
