Call to restart NRC update immediately

GUWAHATI, Aug 10 � The Co-ordination Committee of Linguistic and Religious Minority Organizations of Assam has urged the Centre and the State Government to start the preparation of National Register of Citizens immediately by carrying out house to house enumeration in terms of Rule 4 of 2003 Rules at par with the rest of the country, a press release stated.

The committee, in its meeting held on August 8, urged that all the persons whose names appear in either NRC, 1951, 1955 voters� list or 1971 voters� list with their descendants be included in the fresh NRC.

The meeting also resolved that if the name of any person does not appear in the aforesaid three documents but admittedly he is found to be in Assam prior to March 25, 1971, in such case the Government should notify the documents on the basis of which his name is to be included in the NRC.

The meeting also appealed the Government to dispose the �D� voters issue and pending cases in the Foreigners� Tribunal within December 31 to enable the genuine persons to get their names included in the NRC.

A state-level convention of the committee would be held in September at Howly.

Krantee Divas observed

guwahati, Aug 10 � The Assam Pradesh Freedom Fighters� Association in cooperation with its Kamrup district branch observed the Krantee Divas on August 9 at the premises of the Rest House of Rupnagar. The function commenced with the hoisting of the freedom movement flag with charkha by the president Padma Hazarika with slogan of Bande Mataram. KP Das, veteran freedom fighter, offered tribute to Gandhiji�s statue and the martyrs of the freedom movement. All religious prayer and nam-kirtan were also held on the occasion, said a press note.

A seminar was also held on the subject �Freedom movement in Assam� under the presidentship of Padma Hazarika in which KP Das, Hem Kakaty, Ramesh Sarma and others participated. The president discussed the subject and exhorted the people to come forward to fight against corruption, terrorism, etc for the benefit of the society, the press note added.
