Call to protect Nambor Forest

GOLAGHAT, May 10 � The Nambor Reserved Forest is famous for its bio-diversity and as a place of research and study of its rich flora and fauna. This forest was declared a reserved forest in 2003 by the State government.

Several nature clubs and organisations, NGO�s like Seene, Bonojutshna, Neat, Aaranyak, Nambor Surakshya Samittee here contributed a lot towards the protection of herbal plants and trees.

This forest has 79 kinds of mushroom, 103 varieties of mosses, 62 kinds of �dhekia spinach� and 1,115 kinds of different herbal plants. Dr Gunaram Khonikar, a prominent herbal medicine specialist and Dr Padmeswar Gogoi, a botanist have been involved in research works on herbal plants found at Nambor Reserved Forest.

But several rare orchids are, however, have been facing extinction. The famous Nephorlepiz, �Dhekia� plant which is rare in the world, is available at Nambor. Christer Freshelar Jenkin, a prominent Botanist of Ireland, Chenge Bhotadik, a Russian Scientist and Victor Milad of America have been involved in research work at Nambor. They have studied and researched on orchids which have now become rare. In Nambor RF, many rare species have become now extinct. But the present State government has been neglecting Nambor RF and issues relating to protection and preservation of valuable plants and animals nature lovers alleged.

The reserved forest is famous for elephants, tigers, bears and deer of different varieties. Even several �methuns� have also been found in Nambor RF. The local people of Golaghat have demanded of the Forest Department to look into the matter seriously and take viable measures immediately.
