GUWAHATI, March 27 � Ashok Kumar Nath, Deputy Librarian of the National Library, Kolkata underlined the need to preserve the old newspapers. Nath, who was speaking on the role of the National Library of India in preservation of Indian newspapers here yesterday, described the newspapers as an index of civilisation.
The Media Archives-cum-National Reference Library on the North East organised the lecture as part of its five-day workshop-cum-training programme on preservation of rare and old documents. Yesterday was the second day of the programme.
Nath also spoke on the preservation process adopted for newspapers in the National Library.
Addressing the function as resource person, Utpal Das, Librarian of the GC College, Silchar, spoke on the history of manuscripts in Assam.
He lamented the fact that though there are lots of manuscripts spread all over the State, proper care and preservation technique to lengthen their life is not taken.
As part of the five-day programme, a group of experts from the National Library imparted training to the participants on March 25 on preservation of printed documents using the techniques like de-acidification, tissue lamination etc, under the guidance of Sanjay Maiti, said a press release.
