GUWAHATI, Sept 29 - All sections of indigenous people of Assam should strongly oppose the Central government�s move to provide citizenship to the foreign nationals who came to Assam after March 25, 1971, said former Minister Biraj Kumar Sarma, who was one of the signatories to the Assam Accord.
Sarma today said that the Centre�s move is a clear case of violation of the Assam Accord. He said Assam would not be able to take any additional burden of foreign nationals and such a move would seriously affect the interests of all sections of indigenous people of the State. In the interest of protecting the indigenous people of Assam, the Centre�s move should be opposed, he said.
Sarma pointed out that Assam has already taken the burden of the foreign nationals who came to the State till the midnight of March 24, 1971 and it is not possible for the State to take any more burden of foreign nationals.
Sarma called upon the Prime Minister to reconsider the decision immediately to protect the identity of the indigenous people of the state.
