Call to make swimming compulsory in school

GUWAHATI, June 15 - Expressing shock over the two successive drowning incidents involving the lives of four youths, including a girl student of Cotton College, senior journalist and president of the Guwahati Senior Citizens� Association (GSCA) DN Chakravartty has requested the State Education Minister to introduce a system making swimming compulsory all over Assam right from the primary stage.

Describing the series of drowning tragedies involving hundreds of lives in the last few years, Chakravartty said that in a State dominated by rivers and water bodies, it is essential that all the people are given proper training right from childhood to escape tragic deaths from drowning. Chakravartty said that in the olden times, most of the students hailing from rural areas were accustomed to swimming and instances were galore when many youths escaped death even during the turbulent floods.
