SHILLONG, Sept 27 - The Meghalaya Assembly today unanimously passed a resolution, urging the Centre to include the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

On the last day of the Autumn Session of the Assembly today, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said it is one of the long-standing demands of the people of the State.

Stating that various organisations have raised the demand since long, Sangma said todays resolution was important and thanked all members for supporting it.

There was a lot of discussion and debate in the House, but this is a wonderful way to end the session, Sangma said after the resolution was passed by both Treasury and Opposition members.

Earlier, Congress members PT Sawkmie and Hima Shangpliang thanked the Government for moving the resolution. Sawkmie said that efforts must be made to lobby with the Centre so that these two languages are included in the Eighth Schedule.
