By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 18 The Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha, in its meeting held today, urged the Government of Assam to take effective steps for full implementation of the Assam Official Language Act, 1960 in a manner as enjoined upon by the Act.

The meeting held under the presidentship of DN Chakravartty expressed concern at the indifferent attitude of the Government, particularly its officers and employees towards implementing the Act even after the passage of 60 years.

The general secretary of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi explained the steps taken by the apex literary body to persuade the Government as well as the various public and private agencies for effective implementation of the Act at different levels.

The meeting decided to take out a procession around the city on August 25 at 10 am in order to generate awareness among the general public as well as the trading community about the need to implement the Act in a proper manner.

Several speakers suggested ways and means to encourage the general public, particularly the young generation, to use the Assamese language in their daily life as far as possible.

A committee was constituted to look after the arrangement in connection with the organisation of the procession on August 25.
