Call to follow ideals of Sankaradeva

GUWAHATI, March 18 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today appealed to the people to follow the ideals of Srimanta Sankaradeva and Ajan Fakir. He also laid stress on projecting the ideals and creations of Srimanta Sankaradeva in the world assembly of the humanity.

For this purpose, there was need to conduct research on his activities, Gogoi said and opted for setting up a research station for the purpose either at Nagaon or at Batadraba.

The Chief Minister, who was addressing a function of the five-day Nagaon Bhaona Samaroh, 2013 at Nehrubali as the chief guest, described Srimanta Sankaradeva as the oarsman of Assamese language, literature and culture, besides being a religious leader.

According to an official release Gogoi said Sankaradeva tried to unite the different ethnic groups by preaching a liberal religion. He was also for a classless society. Ajan Fakir also preached ideals of tolerance.

Sankaradeva enriched Assam culturally. The songs and drama and the cultural tradition he introduced still inspire the people of Assam. The growing popularity of Bhaona developed by him is proof of the relevance of his creations, he said.
