Call to fight cancer, heart diseases

SHILLONG, March 22 � Arjuna awardee MC Mary Kom has asked the people to join hands in the fight against cardiac diseases and cancer.

Addressing media persons at the Don Bosco Technical School here Saturday as part of an awareness programme to combat cancer in women and cardiac ailments, the Olympic medallist said that she would like to create awareness about the preventive aspects of these diseases.

The famed boxer added that she would not like to dwell on the technical aspects of medical sciences, but would continue to speak about these diseases and the measures people can take to prevent them.

Speaking about the region, Mary Kom said that a large number of people are suffering from cancer and heart-related diseases, but the awareness level about these diseases is still very low in the society.

Speaking about her career, she said that in the initial years, few people took note of her, but after she won gold and silver medals at the international level, people started talking about her.

Stating that �sportspersons are respected in the society,� Mary Kom said that people now love to watch boxing events. The champion boxer added that the people of the North-eastern Region have enormous talent in various disciplines and they only need the right kind of encouragement and support.

Giving a piece of advice to budding sports talent, she pointed out that above everything else, a sportsperson needs determination and will power to succeed in his or her career.
