By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 5 - Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi today attended the 351st birth anniversary of the tenth Sri Guru Gobind Singh, which was jointly celebrated by all gurdwaras of Guwahati at Gopinath Nagar here.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Mukhi recollected the towering personality and leadership of Guru Gobind Singh, which are of historic importance. He said Guru Gobind Singh took the lead in institutionalising the Khalsa which played a key role in redefining the Sikh tradition.

After the martyrdom of his father Guru Tegh Bahadur, the tenth Master declared that he would create such a community which would challenge the tyrant rulers in every walk of life to restore justice, equality and peace for all of mankind.

By initiating the Khalsa in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh infused the dual spirit of a saint and a soldier in the minds and hearts of his followers to fight oppression to restore righteousness and uplift the downtrodden people, Prof Mukhi added.

He also called upon the people to take inspiration from Guru Gobind Singh who had sacrificed his father and his four sons to save the country from injustice and all its manifestations.

He also urged all to follow the Gurus teachings on sangat and pangat. In sangat, one should come in contact with good people and work in full cooperation to shun selfishness. In pangat, all sit in a row and collectively have food to discourage discrimination and promote community service.

The Governor wished all on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the 10th Sikh Guru and appealed to all the devotees to emulate the teachings of the Guru and make this State an ideal place for people belonging to all caste, creed and faiths. The First Lady also accompanied the Governor to the gurduwara on the occasion.
