GUWAHATI, Jan 23 Journalists Forum, Assam (JFA) has made an appeal to the people of the NE region to defy the diktats of the separatist militants and celebrate the forthcoming Republic Day on January 26 in a befitting manner.

The journalists body has also made an appeal to the local press clubs, press guilds and other organisations of the media persons of the region to celebrate the Republic Day and the Independence Day in a befitting manner upholding the ideals of the freedom fighters of the country, who made immense sacrifices to make the country free from the yoke of the colonial rule.

Members of the JFA have been celebrating both the Republic Day and Independence Day of the country with public functions at the Guwahati Press Club since 1998, in defiance of the calls of the militant groups to boycott the celebrations of these auspicious days.

This time also several militant groups of the region have given a joint call to boycott the Republic Day celebrations and to observe a bandh from 1 am to 5 pm of January 26.

Meanwhile, the Jatiya Divas Udjapan Mancha, Kumarpara has also been making preparations to celebrate the Republic Day with a public function and some sport events at the Kumarpara Pachali point. The remarkable feature of the Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations organised by the Mancha since January 26, 2005, is the participation of a large number school children.
