Call to defuse border tension

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Aug 24 Former Chief Minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has urged the Home Ministry to initiate action to curb the violence along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border allegedly perpetrated by NSCN (I-M) with support of the Nagaland Government against the people of the State.

In a letter to Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram which was also released to media here, Mahanta said if timely action is not taken by the Home Ministry, it would be difficult to control the situation, which may ultimately result in large-scale violence and loss of lives, besides causing untold sufferings to the people of the State.

In his four-page letter, the AGP leader has sought to explain in detail the genesis of the boundary dispute between Assam and Nagaland.

Mahanta has accused the Assam Police and the State Government of inaction primarily because of absence of Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, who is recuperating in Mumbai after his cardiac surgery.

It is unfortunate that taking advantage of the ill-health of the Chief Minister, Assam Police officials have been running the administration including law and order from air conditioned rooms and through their laptops, Mahanta alleged quoting local media reports.

State Minister, Dr Bhumidhar Barman, who has been given charge, is not allowed to take any major decision including those relating to law and order, the AGP leader reiterated.

Mahanta further urged the Home Minister to initiate measures to protect the inter-state boundary of Assam with Nagaland.
