Call to confer Bharat Ratna on Dr Hazarika

NEW DELHI, Aug 13 � Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has called for the highly prestigious Bharat Ratna award for the ailing Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Making a Special Mention in the Rajya Sabha on Friday afternoon, Kumar Deepak Das stated that the legendary singer who is currently bed-ridden, was a fit person to be conferred the award in recognition of his great service to the nation.

Das said that the winner of the prestigious Dada Saheeb Phalke Award had promoted national integration by touring the remote areas of Nagaland and then North East Frontier Agency (NEFA) now Arunachal Pradesh during troubled times.

He has been involved in the conservation and spread of folk and traditional culture of the north eastern region. He has acted as India�s cultural ambassador throughout the world and brought awareness about the glorious tradition of Indian culture, the AGP MP said.

Further, he had been relentlessly pursuing the cause of the North-east at the national level and Indian culture at the world stage, thereby helping in achieving emotional integration of India with the North-east during the last 70 years.
