GUWAHATI, Oct 30 - The residents of South Sarania and New Sarania areas of the city have urged the district administration and the city police to take special measures to control petty crimes and restore civic facilities in the Sarania-Rajgarh-Gandhi Basti areas, which have been constant nagging issues for the residents for the past couple of years.
Also, with a spurt in construction activities in the Sarania-Lachit Nagar area, the residents have appealed to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to keep vigil on piling of construction material on the roads, which has been a reason for bike accidents and other road mishaps.
A �Diwali Milap� organised by a group of senior citizens of South Sarania and New Sarania localities appealed to the district administration to increase police patrolling in the areas and take measures against incidents of theft and mobile snatching, which are on the rise. They also appealed to the police and civic administration to strictly ensure that the records of tenants staying in rented accommodations are timely submitted and regularly updated in the respective police stations.
�Our areas being old residential localities, many house owners here have rented out small dwelling units to tenants. Such agreements between the house owners and tenants are mostly verbal, which do not have any written contracts. However, as per norms, all such information along with identity proofs of the people residing in the rented houses must be given to the police. This is the responsibility of the house owners,� Prabhat Das, one of the convenors of the community meet stated.
The residents also expressed concern on piling of stone chips, sand etc., near the new construction sites on the lanes and byelanes connecting Sarania, Lachit Nagar and Ulubari areas.
�If the locals complain about blocking of the road or spillage of concrete on the road, it often leads to heated arguments. The authorities, therefore, must conduct inspections near the construction sites regularly and take measures against such activities. The concrete paver blocks of PWD�s road construction projects must also be kept carefully so that minimum inconvenience is caused to the commuters,� Tapas Chowdhary, another senior citizen stated.
The residents also urged the GMC to illuminate the byelanes properly, making the areas safe to commute after dusk.
