DIBRUGARH, June 27 The International Anti Drugs and Illicit Trafficking Day was observed on Friday at the District Library here under the aegis of the North Eastern Buddhist Cultural Association and in collaboration with the district administration, police and Social Welfare department.

The awareness event was attended by a large number of schoolchildren, teachers and police personnel. Deputy Commissioner MS Manivannan attended the function as the chief guest, while Superintendent of Police Rana Bhuyan, Additional Superintendent of Police Hiranya Barman, Drug Inspector Pulin Borah, District Welfare Officer Tapan Baruah and Dr Nabajyoti Gogoi were the guest speakers in the programme.

The Deputy Commissioner, in his speech, said that parents and teachers have the greater responsibility in preventing a child from becoming a drug user or victim of human trafficking. Parenting must be good. Childrens activities and behaviour must be observed. Schools must also educate and make children aware of the harmful effects of drugs and the menace of human trafficking. Anti-drug classes must be held at least once a month to make them aware and vigilant, he said.

While calling for peoples participation in checking drug abuse and trafficking, the Deputy Commissioner said that the whole of the North-east has become vulnerable to drug abuse and trafficking and, therefore, the communitys cooperation has become the need of the hour.

SP Rana Bhuyan said that drug abuse and trafficking cannot be solved with only police action. He said that the combined efforts of all stakeholders like the Health, Excise, Customs, Social Welfare, Labour departments and the civil society, along with community policing, can check the evils to a great extent. He said that the twin evils have not only destroyed families economically but also hijacked peace and harmony from families and the society.

The programme was anchored by Rajib Hazarika, secretary general, North Eastern Buddhist Cultural Association.
