Call to arrest ex-MLA for provocative remarks on NRC

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 14 - The Sadou Deshi Janagosthiya Jatiya Samsad (SDJJS), an organisation of the Deshi Muslim community of the State, has demanded immediate arrest of former All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Ataur Rahman Majarbhuyan for his threat to create a serious law-and-order problem in the State on the issue of alleged irregularities in updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Majarbhuyan and his associates had alleged at a press conference organised by the Emarate Shariah at Silchar on September 12 that, NRC State Co-ordinator Prateek Hajela has been conspiring against the Muslim people at the instance of the Assamese chauvinists. If this conspiracy continues, the members of the Muslim organisations would take to the streets and create mayhem.

Hajela has proposed before the Supreme Court of India that the number of supporting documents required to enter names in the NRC should be reduced by excluding some documents. Among the documents suggested to be excluded from the list are the electoral rolls of 1951 and 1971, they said.

Majarbhuyan and his associates claimed that if these documents are dropped from the list of the supporting documents, the NRC will lose its legal validity. If Hajela succeeds in this bid of his, the Muslim organisations would launch a vigorous agitation and create a tumult, warned Majarbhuyan and his associates.

The SDJJS said in a statement here today that Majarbhuyan and his associates have no right to speak on behalf of the Muslim people of the State. If they have anything to state against the NRC updating process, they should move the Supreme Court of India. But instead, these people have resorted to such public statements that would lead to misgivings between the Muslims and Hindus of the State.

These people are also projecting the indigenous Muslim people of the State like those belonging to the Deshi Janagosthiya and Gariya communities as non-Assamese people with a hidden agenda to effect schism among the indigenous people of the State for their political mileage.

The Deshi Janagosthiya people are always with the other indigenous communities and they will always work to defeat all such conspiracies to effect rifts among the indigenous people, said the SDJJS.
