GUWAHATI, Oct 25 - several distinguished educationists, writers and social workers today made an earnest appeal to the youths and students to exercise caution and restraint in bursting of crackers and other inflammable articles and not to indulge in merriment in an extravagant manner in order to maintain the equilibrium in the environment.
This appeal was made at a meeting organised under the auspices of the Rural Women Upliftment Association of Assam at Guwahati College, Bamunimaidan.
The function was presided over by Dr Pranab Sandilya, Principal of the college. In his speech, he emphasised creating mass awareness on environmental pollution which was threatening the very existence of mankind.
The chief organiser, Surja Kumar Bordoloi, welcomed the guests and explained the purpose of the function.
Addressing the meeting as chief guest, senior journalist DN Chakravartty appealed to the public in general and the youths and students in particular to be careful and responsible during the Diwali days and to avoid indiscriminate bursting of crackers, which might cause physical and mental injury to the aged, ailing persons and children.
He also spoke about the necessity of keeping bursting of crackers to the absolute minimum in order to avoid pollution of the environment.
Dr Chandra Baruah, Scientific Officer, Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Dr Nityananda Sarma and Dr Jayashree Choudhury, in their speeches, stressed the need for the public to extend cooperation to the local administration in the matter of maintaining peace and tranquillity during the Diwali days.
Writer Manorama Das narrated her experiences in the Western countries, especially in the UK and the US, where the general public are extremely conscious about environmental pollution.
