GUWAHATI, Sept 18 - Greenland�s summer heat has broken all previous records this time as 440 billion tonnes of ice are feared to have disappeared. Again, the Amazon is on fire, so is Central Africa. Under such a situation, a Swedish teenage climate activist, 16-year-old Greta Thunberg is leading the world�s biggest children�s action for climate ever on September 20, just before a United Nations-sponsored crucial �Global Climate Action Summit� scheduled to be held from September 20 with an eight-day programme.
This worldwide action of the children is dubbed as the �Global Climate Strike� and it is aimed at mounting pressure on governments the world over to take effective steps for preventing further warming of the globe and also to mitigate the adverse impacts of the changes taking place in global climate.
Teachers, educationists, scientists, environment activists, sociologists and social workers the world over have also extended their support to this global programme of the children.
The All India People�s Science Network (AIPSN) at its general council meeting held in New Delhi on September 15 and 16, decided to extend its full support to this global action programme of the children. The State wing of the AIPSN comprising the Assam Science Society, Gyan Bigyan Samiti, Ellora Vigyan Mancha and CRU (NER), also sent its representatives to the meeting.
The State unit of AIPSN has also appealed to the people of the State to take part in the September 20 programme. In case it is not possible for the people of any part of the State to take part in the September 20 programme, they can organise the climate strike on any date between September 20 and 27 so as to register their support to the global initiative of the children on matters related to the future of humanity, said the AIPSN State wing.
The AIPSN State wing has appealed to the students of the State to wave placards in front of their respective educational institutions during leisure on September 20. The students may also resort to formation of human chains in front of their respective educational institutions that day. Similarly, the teachers, educationists, scientists, employees, intellectuals and the common people may also take part in the students� programmes or they may organise their own symbolic protest programmes that day or any time between September 20 and 27, said the AIPSN State wing.
