Call for stricter law to prevent crimes against women

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 31 - Condemning the recent spurt in incidents of crime against women in the State, the North East Girl Students Association has asked the State government to take strong preventive measures and ensure strictest punishment to the perpetrators of such crimes.

Expressing its concern over the rise in rape cases in Assam, the Association said the present State government has totally failed to provide security to women and stringent laws are needed to curb such crimes. The Association demanded fast track trials for cases related to crime against women and the need of self-defense training for women.

ANN Service/Jorabat adds: The Srijan Art Group and the Dimoria Press Club yesterday joined hands to express outrage over rising incidents of atrocities against women.

Condemning the recent rapes of children and women in the State, including that of a six-year-old girl at Khetri, a group of artists from the two organisations painted murals on walls, bridges and flyovers in the Dimoria region on the theme Stop crime against women and children.

We thought of this idea because today everything is digitalised and people can go online and share news about our form of protest. This is our silent way of protest with our paints and brushes, said a member of the Dimoria Press Club. The Srijan Art Group said it will continue the protest through paintings in other parts of the region.
