Call for steps to preserve ancient monuments

SIVASAGAR, June 19 � Rangpur Ancient Monuments Preservation Society (RAMPS) submitted a memorandum to Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Jatindra Lahkar yesterday demanding steps to preserve ancient monuments and sites in Sivasagar district.

They said that the historic Jamuna lake, which was excavated during the Ahom period, was being continuously encroached upon. They requested Lahkar to conduct a survey to know the status of these historical monuments and sites. They also demanded to establish a life-size statue of Joymati at Joymati Udyan near Bhatiapar and continue construction of Rangpur Bhawan at Joysagar near Mancotta-ali.

Sulfa body memo: The All Assam Surrendered Ulfa Samity yesterday submitted a memorandum to Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Jatindra Lahkar, demanding release of small tea grower Chitananda Baruah, permission to grow tea and rubber along the border area, halt to atrocities on surrendered Ulfa members and immediate arrest of the DFO Ranjan Kumar Das.

They alleged in the memorandum that Das had physically assaulted Chitananda Baruah recently during an eviction drive at Geleki Resrve Forest, and tried to shoot him. Baruah was later arrested and sent to the Sivasagar Jail on the basis of a complaint filed by the DFO.
