Call for security in Sattras, Devalayas

GUWAHATI, Jan 4 - Luminaries of Sattriya culture and the Kalakshetra Society here have expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of thefts at the places of worship like Sattras and Devalayas in the State.

Dr Keshavananda Dev Goswami, Punyabrat Dev Goswmai of Nikamul Sattra, Bhadrakanta Goswami and Kushal Chandra Goswami of Asom Sattra Mahasabha, Ripu Mahanta of Jokai Sattra, Kusha Bordoloi of Naruwa Sattra, Nigamananda Adhikar, Durgeswar Bayan and Madan Kalita of Samoria Sattra and others have stressed the need of security of the Sattras and Devalayas and called for immediate government intervention in this regard.

It needs to be mentioned here that political parties like the BJP and the AGP have

already appealed for government intervention to protect the places of worship. Anti-social elements have ransacked many Sattras in lower Assam and even stolen valuable manuscripts.

The State BJP has also submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Assam, urging him to do the needful to secure the precincts of the Sattras and pointing out that such incidents have hurt the sentiments of the people.
