Call for plantation drives from April 22

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, March 17 - The Environmental Policy Foundation (EPF) has called for a massive tree plantation drive by college students during the period from Earth Day and Environment Day.

In a notice forwarded by the Department of Higher Education, Government of Assam, and Director of Higher Education, Assam, all the colleges and technical education institutes have been asked to organise tree plantation drives from Earth Day on April 22 to Environment Day on June 5. This initiative may help in effective tree plantation drives covering maximum areas with the maximum number of saplings, the EPF statement said adding environment protection has become an important agenda for mitigating problems arising out of climate change and global warming all over the world, including India.

Earth Day and Environment Day are observed for raising awareness and emphasise hand-holding practices to protect the environment, biodiversity and control the anthropogenic activities for a healthy, green and clean environment.

The statement further said the duration between these two days being 44 days, there would be enough scope for organising several plantation programmes by the respective authorities of the educational institutions in and around the campus covering semi-urban and rural places involving students and community. This will also be helpful for taking proper care of newly planted trees, it said.

The United Nation Environment Assembly has declared Air pollution as the theme of World Environment Day for this year.
