Call for finding ways to turn waste into wealth

GUWAHATI, Sept 12 - The two-day Eastern Zone Regional Conference on Waste Disposal and Management, organised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in collaboration with the Pollution Control Boards, different committees and the Environment and Forest Department of the Assam government, concluded at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here on Sunday, stated an official press release.

Several hundred students, Judges and Justices of various High Courts of the country and other functionaries took part in the conference.

Three technical sessions were held in the conference, in which disposal and management of municipal waste water and solid waste, disposal and management of bio-medical waste (BMW), e-waste and plastic waste were discussed.

In the plenary session, Justice Satish Kumar Agnihotri, Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, Justice Dr P Jyothimani, Dr SS Garbyal, CPCB chairman SPS Parihar, Assam Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia, Dr Gopal Krishna Pandey, Dr DK Agarwal and Gauhati High Court Judge Justice Hrishikesh Roy took part.

The valedictory session of the conference was chaired by NGT Chairman Justice Swatanter Kumar. Supreme Court Judge Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel addressed the session. Justice SP Wangdi, member, NGT Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata, welcomed the guests and MK Yadav, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Assam, offered the vote of thanks.

Several speakers laid stress on proper waste management and working out a solution to turn �waste� into �wealth�. Several students from the State and outside were awarded on the occasion, the press release added.
