GUWAHATI, March 8 � On the occasion of International Women�s Day on Sunday, the Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress called upon all women to come forward and participate in the process of political decision making.
At a function held at Rajiv Bhawan here, senior party leaders including APCC president Anjan Dutta stressed the need to empower women at the grassroots.
The function was presided over by Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mridula Saharia. Speaking on the occasion, Saharia said that for development of the country it was important to empower women politically and economically.
Anjan Dutta in his speech said the party would welcome young and new faces who would take the initiative to bring about a change in the society. He also mentioned that it was the responsibility of the senior leaders of the party to extend the necessary guidance to the youngsters. �Empowerment of women should not be a restricted term. It should reach out to all women at the grassroots,� he said.
Minister Ajanta Neog said the term empowerment of women should be realised in the true sense. She regretted that even at this age, women were discriminated against and called for offering equal opportunities to women. �Education is a must for empowerment of women,� she stressed.
The meet was also attended by Hemaprabha Saikia, Abir Patra and other senior party leaders.
It needs to be mentioned here that the theme for this year�s International Women�s Day is �Make it Happen�. This day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality.
Different organisations including the NF Railway Mazdoor Union and All India Mahila Sanskritic Sangathan observed the day here.
The Fransalian Agency for Social Care and Education also celebrated the day at SFS School, Narengi. The major attraction of the day was exhibition of SHG products and food festival.
