Call for early completion of war memorial

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 7 - The Patriotic Peoples Front Assam (PPFA) has urged the Assam government to complete construction of the proposed war memorial on the northern bank of the Dighalipukhuri here at the earliest.

The organisation, while supporting the arguments of the All Assam Ex-Servicemen Association that the project would in no way distort the heritage appeal, aesthetic beauty and ecological sanctity of the historic water-body, also appealed to the citizens who are opposing the endeavour, not to hinder early completion of the project.

The proposed war memorial would comprise statues of Lachit Barphukan and other soldiers in the Battle of Saraighat, an Amar Jawan Jyoti reverse rifle with a helmet on top, a uniformed soldier with his rifle reverse arm salute and also relevant murals depicting various battles of post and pre-independent India.

In a statement, the PPFA reiterated that a war memorial in the city was a long-standing demand of the patriotic people of the region and hence the project must not suffer at the final stage of its construction.

The PPFA also urged the political parties and civil society groups to avoid using the southern bank of the Dighalipukhuri as their frequent protest-demonstration venue.
