GUWAHATI, May 8 The first sitting of the task force on agriculture development in Assam following an instruction of the governing council of NITI Ayog came up with several recommendations for submission to the Ayog.

The meeting was chaired by Assam Agriculture Minister Rakibul Hussain.

Sources in the Agriculture department told The Assam Tribune that the meeting called for channelizing quality seeds production and distribution with emphasis on proper distribution of foundation seeds. It was also recommended that farmers be assisted for utilization of electrical pumps for irrigation purposes since diesel-operated pumps are costlier. The minister said that the government was willing to help the farming community by providing electrical connection in crop field areas.

Another suggestion was to go for the market intelligence production system to avoid distress sale by farmers.

The report to be sent to NITI Ayog will be finalized at the next sitting of the task force.

Dr KM Buzarbaruah, Vice Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, made a presentation on Initiatives necessary for augmentation and doubling of production and productivity of crops and allied sectors considering their potential in the State.

Among those who attended the meeting were Additional Chief Secretary and Agriculture Production Commissioner VK Pipersenia, Assam Rajiv Gandhi University for Cooperative Management Vice Chancellor, and senior Agriculture Department officials besides heads of departments of Fishery, Panchayat and Rural Development, veterinary and Animal Husbandry, and bank officials from NABARD, SBI, etc.
