Call against child labour

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, June 12 - On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour today, the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) has appealed to all sections of society to refrain from employing children at offices, business establishments and for domestic purposes.

In a press release, ASCPCR Chairperson Dr Sunita Changkakati said that despite all efforts, child labour is still prevailing in the State.

If we see at the Census Report of 2011, we find that 5 in every 100 children between 5 and 14 years of age in the State are child labourers, said Dr Changkakati. As per the Census Report of 2011, in Assam 4.9 per cent of the total population of children in the age group of 5 to 14 years are employed as child labourers.

Dr Changkakati also appealed to the parents of vulnerable sections not to let their children work and stressed that the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, ensures free education for children up to the age of 14 years.

Stating that the actual figures might be even more than what has been reported in the Census Report of 2011, the ASCPCR Chairperson said, People should report child rights violation cases to competent authorities. If they are scared of approaching the police then they can approach us, we will keep their names confidential.

Appreciating the work done by various district child labour task forces, she appealed to all the task forces to be more vigilant.

Pledge against child labour: A mass oath-taking programme was held against child labour by the officials of Kamrup (Metro) DCs office today on the occasion of World Day against Child Labour.

The oath-taking event was held in the conference hall of the DCs office. It was administered by Dr Bijoya Choudhury, District Development Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro).

Around 150 officials, including additional deputy commissioners, circle officers, assistant commissioners and departmental heads of various offices took a pledge not to allow child labour in their respective homes and to prevent it amongst their neighbours.
