SILCHAR, July 25 - A day after the turmoil at the Rosekandi Tea Estate in Cachar district over an alleged attack and counter attack between general manager IB Ubhadiya and labourers, the garden management has issued a lockout notice citing threat to life and property.
Dina Nath Baroi, assistant general secretary of Barak Cha Shramik Union informed that he had received the lockout notice with threat to life and property and management's non-execution of day-to-day administrative and executive orders as reasons for shutting down with copies marked to Secretary, Department of Labour and Employment, Cachar DC, SP and said that he would be referring the case to the Assistant Labour Commissioner here seeking his intervention.
"We are disappointed with whatever has happened on Wednesday at the garden. But we are even more hurt to receive the lockout notice. There were other ways to solve the crisis. The decision, I believe is anti-labour and I shall seek intervention of Assistant Labour Commissioner to look into the matter," Baroi said.
On the other hand, talking to The Assam Tribune, Ajit Singh, general secretary of the shramik union and also a former minister said," The decision is unfortunate. The crisis could have been solved through a discussion among garden management, District administration and the Cha Shramik Union."
It may be mentioned that tension simmered across the garden after agitated labourers of Shahpur outgarden cordoned the residence of the general manager over alleged attack on a female garden worker.
Later, the repercussion took an ugly turn when the PSO of the manager had to fire in the air in anticipation of a mob attack on the general manager.
