Cachar set to be declared ODF dist on Oct 2

SILCHAR, Sept 29 - Cachar district is on the threshold of becoming an Open Defecation Free (ODF) district on October 2.

According to AB Choudhury, Executive Engineer PHE Division II which is the Nodal Department for the ongoing Swachhata hi Seva campaign under the Swachhata Bharat (Rural) mission, out of 1, 36,441 Individual Household Latrine (IHHL) across 1015 villages under 15 blocks, the district now has 1,34, 285 toilets completed so far and the remaining 2156 toilets shall be constructed before October 2. On the other hand, Rajesh Das, local municipal commissioner and in-charge of the conservancy wing of the civic board said that in the urban category, even as Silchar has been declared open defecation free long time ago, 150 new toilets have been made so far and the Municipal Board is fighting a �war against garbage� to keep the city clean.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Dr S Laxmanan said that the long-awaited mission to see the district open defecation free shall materialise with the ongoing Swachhata hi Seva campaign. �We are eagerly waiting to witness a historic moment when Cachar district would be declared an ODF district. A number of initiatives and awareness drives have been taken in the run up to the moment when become an ODF district and we shall announce a number of awards as a part of the achievement. There would be awards for cleanest village, school, hospital, office, Anganwadi centre and the safai workers shall be felicitated on the occasion,� Dr Laxmanan added.
