SILCHAR, Sept 16 - Unlike yesteryears, people in Silchar will not be allowed to throng the bridges over river Barak, both old and new at Sadarghat on the dawn of Mahalaya this year.
Amidst the unabated rise of COVID-19 positive cases, the Cachar district administration has imposed certain restrictions ahead of Mahalaya and Vishwakarma Puja on Thursday.
In an order issued on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairperson, District Disaster Management Authority Keerthi Jalli has said that movement of more than three persons in a group on the roads on Mahalaya morning is restricted. Crowd gathering at any place will not be allowed. However, people can move on the roads in small groups of maximum three persons. Wearing of masks and maintaining physical distancing has been made mandatory.
The order also stated that people will not be allowed to roam about or gather on both the bridges (old and new) located at Sadarghat from 9 pm of September 16 till 6 am of September 18. Entry will be strictly restricted at these bridges.
Further, the order said that Vishwakarma Puja shall also be celebrated with maximum 15 persons and congregation at any place will not be allowed. Distribution of wet food (prasad) by any puja samiti has been prohibited. However, packed prasad (dry food only) are allowed. No decoration of pandals, lighting and roadside stalls will be permitted. Meanwhile, the ritual of pitri-tarpan is allowed on the banks of rivers maintaining COVID-19 protocols.
Our Hailakandi Correspondent adds: Restrictions have been imposed in Hailakandi district as precautionary and preventive measures in view of the COVID-19 pandemic situation on Mahalaya and Vishwakarma Puja. Both the occasions will be observed on Thursday.

Vishwakarma Puja shall be celebrated with a maximum of 15 persons and congregation at any place will not be allowed. Only packed prasad (dry food ) is permitted.
No decoration of pandals, lighting and roadside stalls will be permitted.�
�Violation of this order will attract punitive action under relevant sections of Disaster Management Act, 2005 and IPC,� Dahal warned.
