SILCHAR, Nov 28 - In a bizarre incident, an infant who was denied treatment at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital is now being treated at the NICU of the hospital. And, this became possible only after the Cachar district administration intervened in the matter.
According to sources, Renu Fulmati, wife of Dinesh Fulmati, an employee of Lalang Tea Estate under Lakhipur subdivision in Cachar district gave birth to a baby at the BP Kedia Central Hospital in Labac on Wednesday afternoon. Sources said that the abdominal portion of the infant was exposed after birth and the doctors asked the parents to shift the baby to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
According to Dinesh, the hospital refused to treat the baby and suggested them to shift the newborn to Guwahati at their own risk. We are poor people. How can we take our child to Guwahati at this critical juncture, Dinesh maintained.
Later, when the matter was brought to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner S Viswanathan, he asked the Superintendent of the hospital Dr AS Baishya to immediately admit the newborn.
As soon as I was informed, I told the superintendent to admit the baby and start treatment, Vishwanathan said.
As per the version of Dr Baishya, this is a case of gastroschisis in medical parlance, since the abdominal walls of the baby have not been properly formed at the time of birth.
