SILCHAR, FEB 24: Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli, in a letter to the Mission Director National Health Mission Assam has underlined the need for adequate treatment of thalassemia patients stating " the want of a haematologist at the SMCH is creating difficulties in the treatment of patients afflicted with thalassemia. Also, the requirement of blood transfusion has become a challenge due to COVID-19 situation.

"We have written to the Government for conducting quarterly camps in Silchar as we need a hematologist here for sending the thalassemic children for bone marrow transplantation. Repeated tests in Guwahati cost a lot to the families coming from poor financial backgrounds, the Deputy Commissioner," said.

Meanwhile, Mission Director NHM Dr S Laxmanan while responding to the issue said that a letter from the District Administration reflecting the need for haematologist in Cachar has been received and NHM is planning to hold a session in Cachar soon depending on the availability of haematologist.
