Cachar admin on edge after detection of more COVID-19 cases

SILCHAR, May 8 - Three more persons who returned from Ajmer have tested COVID-19 positive in Cachar district. While this was confirmed by a tweet from Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma at 3.45 pm today, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy said the district is gearing up to put in place as many as 6,000 beds for quarantine, if the situation gets worse in the next few days.

So far, the Silchar Medical College and Hospital have six COVID-19 positive patients undergoing treatment and the newly detected positive patients have taken the tally to nine positive patients in the district, he added.

�We are taking measures to put in place 2,000 beds for institutional quarantine immediately and up to 6,000 beds for facility quarantine if cases blow up in the district. We are also contemplating that the district is likely to be taken in the Orange zone bracket. However, there is nothing to panic,� Dr Roy told mediapersons here.

Suman Choudhury, district media expert, NHM, said 14 members from the families of four positive contacts, who are from Pechador Ramnagar area in the district, have been taken to the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya quarantine centre and the three new positive patients, who shared the same bus from Ajmer with the person from Sonitpur district, will be shifted to the COVID-19 ward at Silchar Medical College and Hospital by tonight.

�From the contact tracing history of the positive patients, over 180 persons have been listed for quarantine,� Choudhury added.

Keerthi Jalli to join as new Cachar DC: In an order from the Department of Personnel, Government of Assam, issued on Friday, Keerthi Jalli, IAS, the Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, has been transferred and posted as the new Deputy Commissioner of Cachar district.

Jalli who joined as Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner in January 2019 will replace the outgoing Cachar Deputy Commissioner Barnali Sarma, ACS who has been transferred and posted as the director, Employment and Craftsmen Training.

Megha Nidhi Dahal, IAS, who has been rendering duties as staff officer to the Chief Secretary, will join as the new Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, the order said.
