By A Correspondent

GANGTOK, Oct 20 - As many as 15 candidates are in the fray for the bypolls to three Assembly constituencies in Sikkim on Monday.

A total of 44,534 voters will decide the fate of the candidates in 27-Gangtok, 24-Martam-Rumtek and 10-Poklok Kamrang constituencies.

Six candidates each are contesting for Gangtok and Martam-Rumtek constituencies, and three for Poklok-Kamrang.

In the last elections, the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) had bagged the Gangtok seat while the other two seats had gone to the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF).

SDF president and former Chief Minister of Sikkim Pawan Chamling vacated the Poklok Kamrang after he got elected from two seats.

Similarly, Chamlings party colleague DT Lepcha vacated the Martam-Rumtek seat and Kunga Nima Lepcha of SKM vacated the Gangtok seat following their election from two constituencies each.

Gangtok and Martam-Rumtek seats are reserved for Bhutia-Lepcha (BL) and Poklok Kamrang is an unreserved seat.

In the Assembly polls held in April this year, of total 32 seats, the SKM won 17 and SDF 14, but later 10 SDF MLAs switched over to the BJP and two joined the ruling SKM. Currently, Pawan Chamling is the lone SDF MLA.
