SHILLONG April 19 - The Election Commission today announced that by-polls to Tura Lok Sabha constituency in Meghalaya and Kanubari Assembly seat in Arunachal Pradesh will be held on May 16.

The by-poll to Tura was necessitated due to the demise of former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma on March 4, while the Arunachal Assembly by-poll is required as sitting Congress MLA Gabriel Denwang Wangsu has resigned from the post.

The notification for both the by-elections would be issued on April 22 and last date for filing nominations has been fixed on April 29. Scrutiny of papers would be held on April 30 while the last date of withdrawal of papers is May 2. Counting of votes will take place on May 19. PTI

Our Shillong Correspondent adds: Announcing the dates here, State Chief Election Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor said the Model Code of Conduct has already come into effect. Five districts (East, West, North, South and South West) of Garo Hills constitute the constituency.

The Tura by-polls would be held together with nine other Assembly by-polls to be held in different States of the country.

A meeting via video conference was held with the Deputy Commissioners of the five districts of Garo Hills today for feedback about their preparedness for the polls, he said.

Stating that security aspects would be taken into consideration before the polls are held, Kharkongor said, meetings would be held with the police in this regard.

Altogether, 6.22 lakh voters in Tura would decide the fate of the contestants.
