BONGAIGAON, May 31 - An elderly woman bus passenger died after a gang of robbers snatched her valuables in the bus on the highway near Bijni in the early hours today.
The bus (Jai Ramkrishna) bearing registration number AS 19 AC 1677 had started its journey from Biswanath Chariali to Siliguri in West Bengal on Thursday at around 2:30 pm. When the bus reached Tezpur Mission Chariali, six youths aged about 35/36 each boarded it at about 3:30 pm.
As the bus, in which around 20 passengers were travelling, crossed Sarbhog in Barpeta district and reached near Bijni at around 1:45 am today, the youths robbed cash and valuables from the bus passengers showing pistols and sharp weapons. The robbers thrashed an elderly woman passenger identified as Phulmaya Biswakarma (60), when she refused to give them her gold ornaments. Later, the woman became senseless after her valuables were robbed.
The robbers got down from the bus near Aie river bridge on National Highway 30 in Bongaigaon at around 2:15 am today.
The driver then brought the bus to the Bongaigaon Police Station at around 4 am today and reported the incident to the police. Accordingly, police first sent Phulmaya to the Bongaigaon Civil Hospital along with her relatives and registered a case no 368/2019 under IPC Section 396 on the basis of the report lodged by the driver and passengers of the bus. Later, the bus left for Siliguri with the other passengers.
Doctors declared Phulmaya brought dead at the hospital and after post mortem, the Bongaigaon Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan helped to send the body to her native place Biswanath Chariali by an ambulance.
