AGARTALA, Nov 7 - The Assembly of Journalists, the apex body of media persons in Tripura, has condemned the assault on the States popular daily, Pratibadi Kalam, and burning of its copies at Rajarbagh in Gomati district today by alleged BJP activists and supporters.
The attack reportedly followed in the aftermath of the publication of a news item about a Rs 150-crore scam in the Agriculture Department.
As buses carrying copies of the vernacular newspaper reached the Rajarbagh bus stand at Udaipur, alleged BJP activists and supporters pulled down the packets and made a bonfire of them. Consequently, there was no distribution of the newspaper in Gomati and South Tripura districts today.
The chairman of the Assembly of Journalists and senior editor Subal Kumar Dey condemned the incident and held the ruling party responsible for it. He set a 24-hour deadline for the arrest of the guilty persons.
Meanwhile, the Agartala Press Club and the Working Journalists Association have also condemned the incident.
