BTC elections on Dec 7, 10

GUWAHATI, Nov 17 - Elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) will be held in two phases in December, the State Election Commission announced today. The first phase of the elections will be held on December 7 for constituencies falling under Udalguri and Baksa districts. The constituencies under Kokrajhar and Chirang districts will go to polls on December 10.

On both the dates, polling will be held from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. The date of repoll for first phase, if any, is December 8 and for second phase it is December 11. Counting of votes will be held on December 12. The term of the previous General Council of the BTC had expired on April 27, but the elections were deferred in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, Governor�s Rule was imposed from April. The State Election Commission had earlier notified the schedule for the conduct of the election on March 11. However, after the list of contesting candidates was finalised, the polls were deferred.

�Now the Assam State Election Commission had decided to complete the deferred phases of BTC election in two phases, while strictly following the broad guidelines for conduct of election during COVID-19 pandemic given by the Election Commission of India,� the notification said.

Forty members are elected to the BTC General Council from 40 constituencies. Besides this, six members are nominated by the Governor of Assam from unrepresented communities out of which two should be women.

Also, elections to the Tiwa Autonomous Council will be held on December 17. The counting will be held on December 19.
