Bridge over Brahmaputra

GUWAHATI, March 12 - Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced that the Government of India has approved construction of a bridge over the River Brahmaputra to connect Panbazar with North Guwahati.

In his budget speech, Sarma announced that the Steering Committee of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India had recently approved the State government�s project proposal to construct another Bridge over Brahmaputra connecting Panbazar with North Guwahati. The proposed cost of this project will be Rs 1,890 crore and will be funded by the New Development Bank (NDB) with an implementation period of four years.

In the last budget, the government had earmarked Rs 100 crore to carry out advance action of land acquisition, obtaining relevant clearances and no objections from the agencies concerned. This year, the government is allotting an additional amount of Rs 150 crore to carry out the rest of the preparatory works so that construction activities can be started this year itself. With this, the expansion of Guwahati city towards the north would become a reality, Sarma added.
